Are You Paying Too Much For Your Pet Grooming?

You know when Spike is coming because you can hear the claws scratching on the linolium as he comes running from the other room.  If this fits your canine, then it's most likely time to reach for your trustworthy little PediPaws  and do a little trimming.  Wait, before you go get your reliable PediPaws dog nail clipper out, it's very valuable  to know the makings of your animal's nails so that you will not do harm to your animal.

A dog's nail has a tough outside surface protecting the "quick" which is the internal soft part made of blood vessels and vulnerable nerves.  As such, it is extremely important when trimming your pet's nails, not to get too near the 'quick' or you might give your animal unneccesary pain.

If the animal's nails are light in color you should be able to notice a light pink colored section.  This is the quick I was talking about and the section you will want to stay away from.

If your pet's nails are dark,  it's nearly impossible to spot the "quick"  just by looking.  So the nail grinding procedure needs  your absolute attention.  To eliminate the risk of hurting your dog, you must grind the nail in tiny sections instead of big sections.  After you remove a little area, inspect it.  If you see a dark spot in the clipping,  it's a sign that you are near the start of the quick. Clipping ever so slightly,  make sure you don't go any further when you find a pale inner circle because you have now found the quick.

Also, grown on the inside of the pet's leg and in an area that does not come in contact with the ground is your dog's dew claws.  These too need to be groomed.

Basically, if you trim the dog's nails often, it will be easier for your canine.  Really all you want, is to clip off any bit that protrudes past your canine's pad so when he stands, his nails do not touch the floor.

Whether you are working with a PediPaws or another pet nail cutter , it's most important to follow the instruction manual and be knowledgeable on the appropriate way to use the pet nail trimmer.  This is not the time to use the "when all else fails" method of thinking.

If by accident you grind too far making the nail bleed, apply corn starch until the bleeding stops and an apology to your canine would be in order.

The younger the canine is when you begin the process, the easier it will be for them.  Depending on the size of your dog, you may need to have a friend assist you with the pet nail pedicure or maybe have it professionally done.

Rewarding your K-9 with their favourite doggy toy is always a positive way to end your pet nail trimmer session and may lower the chances of them running away the next time they see you reach for your PediPaw.
